Welcome!

Update 3/9/2014 10:38

Caricature by Lar DeSouza
I'm finally updating the welcome post which is only able to sit at the top of this dated blog because it's post-posted 49 years into the future.  The last update was 7 years ago.

When I first began this blog back in late 2004, It was for the purpose of hosting videos documenting the Westcoast Origami Guild- I believe the longest, most established origami folding group in the greater LA area.

Since that time, Have Paper Will Travel has evolved.  It's more an aggregate blog for all sorts of origami and origami-related items floating around out there that I find interesting; and which I may think readers and followers out there might also find of interest.

There is so much content on the internet these days, it's hard to follow it all.

My sidebar is one of the largest collections of origami-content links in one place.  FYI, it gets updated periodically with new links as I find them.  I should alert readers whenever I add something new, but haven't been (yet).  If you'd like your site or photo album linked and don't see it in the sidebar (check around very carefully and under the proper category), just let me know.  There are sooooo many photo albums out there (it seems almost every folder on the planet has one), I could spend all day collecting up links and still have more to go.

I'd like to do what I can to expand the audience and draw more attention to noteworthy sites and folders; to bring more exposure to the art and science of paperfolding; and to bring more people into "the fold".

There are so many great folders out there on the level of well-known luminaries like Satoshi Kamiya, Brian Chan, and Robert Lang.  I think this especially began to happen after Dr. Lang published "Origami Design Secrets", which I've still not taken the time to sit down and study (let alone fold much from).

Anyway, thanks to everyone who comes by and takes something of usefulness away from here.  Feel free to drop in a comment for any suggestions.

I realize that those viewing on mobile devices may have a difficult time reading the lighter colored font.  I still do not like the background layout of what blogger did to this blog and may eventually update the layout again when I have the time and energy to research into it.  In the meantime....

michael

The purpose of this blog isn't so much a journal, as it is a place where I can host my origami videos, for the purpose of sharing with Origami-L, as well as with friends and all who can appreciate the joys of paperfolding.
Special thanks to Michael Whitt for educating me on the wonders of modern technology.

This place is still under massive construction, and this post will remain at the top until I have all my videos from the past year uploaded. Don't be fooled by the dates. I decided to date them according to around the time they were made, so much of what you'll find will be in the archives.

Stay tuned!

Update 10/13/05- This blog is now pretty much current, as far as all my videos go. There might be a couple more old ones I'll upload later. The links column is ever-chang
ing, as time permits. If you have an origami page (chances are I already have it, but just haven't put it up yet) you'd like me to link to, it'll probably go up quicker if you e-mail it to me (or leave a comment here) .

A reminder to those who don't know, since I get asked quite frequently: The tools I am using in order to make these videos is an old, beat up 2.0 Canon digital camera and Windows movie maker, which is a free feature with your Windows package. The camera only takes movie clips at 10-20 seconds in length. String 'em together, laced with music, and there ya go! It's really quite simple; and the ease of today's technology makes one feel like a genius.

Update 11/08/05 Someone asked me if it is possible to view the videos on a larger screen. If you click on the YouTube icon at the bottom right corner of the embedded screen (or double-click), it will take you directly to where the video is actually hosted. There, you will notice a new icon at the bottom-right in the form of a square with an arrow through it. Click that, and it will enlarge the screen for you.

I hope this inspires others on the O-List to share videos of what's going on in their neck of the woods, whether it's vids similar to mine or completely different.

Hope you guys enjoy what you see!
Update 04/28/07 I now have been using a Sony Cybershot DSC-H, which allows me to take much better videoclips, and not cut out after 10 seconds. With a 4GB memory card, I can take a pretty long video, now. In light of that, you will be seeing more videos, minus the music.

  1. Egad! Didn't think I'd have a visitor so quickly! Thanks for all your help and tips, Michael. I'm still doing major renovations and house-building here; it'll take me the rest of the month before I'm settled in and ready to unveil this blogsite to my fellow origamists.

  31. Hello, I'm a fellow origami enthusiast. I love your origami, especially the rabbits at the table with carrots. Good luck with making more videos of them and nice to know you've got a bigger memory card for longer videos.

I just found this iPad origami application and was wondering what you thought of it. I think it is helpful to be able to have control of how fast or slow the instruction is. I also like that you can move the origami in any direction to really understand how the fold was made.

It would be interesting to hear your opinions and thoughts.

Not sure what to make of the last couple of comments since they seem like spam/advertisements with the links...but I'll let them stand since they aren't of the automated spam variety that gives the generic "love your site! Found this blog very interesting and informative" comment.

  36. Michael is a really great folder - I folded with him at WCOG from 1998-2003 and he has a true passion and is a gifted folder.

He has not commented for over a year (last posting from him in 2011), so I wonder how he is ?

I would really like to get in touch to get his help on how to fold the Origami Angel that Phylis would teach every X-mas and we would decorate the tree in the library with.. it was a very nice angel with beautiful wings, a halo and praying hands...

    ReplyDelete
  37. Hey anon,

    Who is this? It's not true that I haven't posted a comment since 2011. That's a headscratcher...

I can help you with that angel if you're still able to attend WCOG.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hi Michael, it's Jerry - remember me from WCOG meetings ? I am on the East Coast, so unable to attend WCOG meetings :(

So sad to hear about the passing of Phylis, she was a very genuine person with good spirit.

Is there anyway you can send me diagram or in process photos of Phylis' Angel ? I tried your old e-mail addresses, but maybe they no longer work. (I will send my e-mail to Helen, if you can get it from her).

According to Cathy Ortiz, the Angel was a design Phylis learned from her friend Louise Cooper, and (according to David Lister) Louise co-founded WCOG in 1972 after a visit from Alice Gray - friend of Lillian Oppenheimer and co-founder of Origami USA.

Please check with Helen, hope to get in touch with you soon.

    Keep on folding,
    Jerry

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm sorry, Jerry. I forgot all about replying back to you!

Helen's in Italy right now; but I will email her for your address.

    Good to hear from you.

Since you're on the east coast, I hope you are in NYC right now for OUSA.

  45. I found your blog and was wondering if you would be interested in spreading the word about a Kickstarter I just launched on pre-creased origami paper.

I folded 1,000 paper cranes last year. I was struggling so much with the sheer quantity until I started embossing my paper with the required folding times. After embossing, I could fold the cranes in half the time without looking at my hands!

I want to share this idea with any other origami enthusiasts or beginners who want an easier way to get into paper folding, so I need to spread the word!

Thank you very much for your consideration!
