Photo of the Day: Wyoming Medical Center

From 2013:

Wyoming Medical Center employees walk beneath the 1,001 origami cranes hanging in our South Link Lobby. A Japanese legend says anyone folding 1,000 cranes will be granted a wish. Folding the last one brings good luck.

Patients and families at Wyoming Medical Center have a new view as they walk into the South Link Lobby from the parking garage – 1,001 origami cranes. In line with WMC’s vision, mission and values, we hope the cranes bring visitors positive wishes such as recovery from illness and a long life of happiness.

~~~
 As you walk through the hospital’s South Link Lobby, look up and enjoy the beautiful view the cranes bring. The Wyoming Medical Center Foundation would like to thank the Nicolaysen Art Museum for lending us this display.
Photo of the Day
From December 30, 2012, excerpt from a giant origami crane in Logan Square:
The idea for the crane began because one of her friends, apparently, makes these guys all the time. In fact, as we were chatting in her living room, Sima’s father showed me a small crane that was sitting on the coffee table.
I learned that the crane in the yard does, indeed, light up in the evenings – and is set on a timer (to go off around 4:30 PM). I also found out that Sima has plans to include a workstation outside, where people would be able to write down their wishes for the new year, create their own origami cranes, and add it to the one in the yard.
In a way, this additional component transforms the crane from something you just observe to something that you interact with… as anyone passing by would be able to participate.
Origami Crane Godzilla
This was created by Jessica Langella and published 7 years ago:
Origami Crane Godzilla - Approximate height 5'6". Free-standing sculpture composed of over one thousand individual origami cranes, traditional symbols of peace, arranged around a chicken wire armature to form a Godzilla-type monster. This work evokes the symbolism of Godzilla as the first truly evil monster of the 20th century and its conception as the response of a culture that had experienced nuclear warfare. This sculpture calls attention to the need to examine traditional ideas of peace and what those ideas can be manipulated into, as in the paper cranes that are manipulated into this destructive monster.
In wake of the new Godzilla movie being released tomorrow, they were looking for an origami artist a couple of weeks back, willing to be on site at the premiere to fold Godzilla monsters; but were also looking into having 400 or so pre-folded to give out.  They were unaware of copyright issues and amount of time it may take to fold, depending upon the complexity of the model.
Tanya Little Little dreamer, fly away. I have always loved Origami, and seeing the expressions on the boys' faces when they realize they can make things out of paper, too.. well, I adore it. Let your imagination guide you little ones.
Photo of the Day
Simon Chirgwin:
A photo that I really like - as soon as I saw the print, flicking through the packet I'd just got from Snappy Snaps, I thought, "Yes. Ooh. Yes." Which partly goes to show how carefully I have honed my critical vocabulary.
However, I also suspect that people passing by this on screen (and I write this without knowing what the thumbnail will be ) will go "nuh - double exposure" and pass on, while I knew it was a reflection in the window of Oxfam where there's currently a display of origami cranes.
Why this should make any difference to how I (or you) value the image is something that I can't put my finger on.
Whatever - this is part of a roll taken to see how Kodak BW400CN shaped up, and - IMHO - it shapes up very well: great blacks, crisp and sharp...
Cranes for Flight MH370
Origami cranes as symbol of hope
Malaysiakini:
MH370 Penangites have come together to fold paper cranes and offer prayers for passengers and crew and their families as the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 enters its ninth day.
Hundreds of colourful paper cranes lined the front of the Whiteaways building in the morning event, organised by Occupy Beach Street, which saw many, including tourists and politicians, show their solidarity with the victims of the missing plane.
Fall back, spring forward:
Sok Song
Sok is known for these wondrous jump photos.
I love Dennis Walker's suggestion:
Am I the only person to wants to see either:-
a) a flip book of Sok jumping and/or
b) an animated gif of all the Sok-jumps with Sok in roughly the same position, but with the photos fading from one to the other. Effectively an almost motionless Sok with changing background
I missed out on the post-Conference tour of Kevin's Studio last year since I had to get back home early from PCOC, for work.
