A few PCOC Exhibits
All the exhibits at PCOC were impressive! I posted photos on the Westcoast Origami Guild Facebook page. I just don't have the energy to upload on Snapfish (have to figure out the password, now) where I've been hosting photos for the past few years over Flickr.

This exhibition is a continuation of the first origami art exhibition in Croatia, with international origami masters, Poetry in Paper in Krapina in 2008. This time, we had fine art professionals, jurying and setting up the exhibition. We had a special way to open the exhibition: the Cultural Attaché of the Japanese Embassy in Zagreb, Mr. Ryohei Nakajima, unfolded a Miura map to symbolize the opening. Some of the feedbacks are that visitors lingered more around origami than around food and drinks, and that the Gallery personell had to gently remind the last of us it was nine, the closing time.

Origami in the Garden
![]() |

Origami in the Garden is a large-scale outdoor sculpture exhibition created by Cerrillos artist Kevin Box. The exhibition at the Santa Fe Botanical Gardens on Museum Hill opened on April 25th. The entire exhibit features 15 origami sculptures. Using lost wax casting and fabrication techniques Box captured the delicate nature of origami, the art of paper folding, in the more permanent medium of metal. A single blank page inspired each sculpture in the Origami in the Garden collection. If you haven’t seen this exhibit yet put it on your schedule. It runs through October 25th. Admission is free to New Mexico residents (with ID) on Sunday, September 14th from 9am to 5pm.

The Curious Art of Origami
New exhibit coming soon to Pasadena:
I believe Meher McArthur is the same curator that coordinated with Dr. Lang during the Origami exhibit at the Japanese-American National Museum in Little Tokyo a few years ago.
Using mathematical calculations to map out the folds necessary to form particular elements of an animal, bird or insect, origami artists from all over the world have been designing increasingly complex forms, often out of a single square of paper with no cuts or glue. Some artists, however, have pushed the artistic boundaries of origami by experimenting with different types of paper and new folding techniques to create works that barely resemble traditional origami – elaborately patterned geometric forms called tessellations and simple figural or abstract forms created with very few folds.
Curated by Meher McArthur
Featuring art by Robert Lang, Linda Mihara & Giang Dinh
The Curious Art of Origami opens September 19, 2014.
On view daily (except Sunday) through November 19, 2014.
9:30am-6pm in the Shumei Hall Gallery.

Surface to Structure Exhibition
![]() |
| Rabbits in Motion, Ronald Koh, Folded by Ng Boon Choon |
HuffPo:
Now, decades after the original exhibition, origami is about to make a grand return to The Cooper Union. The revival show, titled "Surface to Structure: Folded Forms," will bring together over 80 artists from 5 continents, showing how the ancient art has evolved since "Plane Geometry." Origami masters and contemporary artists will come together from all corners of world, displaying the artistic potential embedded in every single sheet of paper.
"We want to share our passion for this art form with the world and inspire others to take part in and contribute to the legacy of origami," explained exhibition curator Uyen Nguyen, currently a senior at The Cooper Union. Nguyen is currently raising funds for the exhibition, which will be free to the public, on IndieGogo. The money raised will go to the international shipping costs of the works as well as insurance and installation fees. Head to the IndieGogo page to learn more and donate.

Horsing Around in Little Tokyo
Last Friday, I made my monthly trip to Little Tokyo to pick up my NOA subscription.
I found John Montroll's recent book with 26 horse models and purchased it.
Classic Montroll horse will always remain my favorite:
Next year will be the Year of the Horse, so it's a very timely book.
For those familiar with J-Town, ever take a notice at the lobby of what's across the street?
| Kinokuniya Bookstore in Los Angeles. The selection of Japanese origami books seems to have shrunk. |
I found John Montroll's recent book with 26 horse models and purchased it.
SKU: B13-128
Price: $19.95
26 wonderful horse-themed models from John Montroll and an international group of contributors. Models range from mythical (Pegasus, Unicorn, Centaur) to useful (Horse Bookmark and Pop-Up Horse Card) to various horse breeds (Quarter Horse, Clydesdale, Mustang, Lippizzan). There are easier models (Stick Horse, Simple Pony, Ponytail Pony) and more complex models, such and a painted horse that uses both sides of the paper to achieve the color effect, and a horse and rider from a single sheet. All models are folded from one square sheet of uncut paper, except for one horse folded from a dollar bill. Each diagram includes interesting facts on the model. Color photos and color diagrams with helpful text descriptions.

Joisel is quite renown for his masks and human figures. I don't think his canine models get quite enough of the attention that they deserve...
