Disaster Relief Ad Counsel commercial featuring dollar origami
Joel Stern recently inquired to the Origami-L about an ad that's been recycled in wake of the California wildfires.
While using the search function for any previous discussions about it on the O-List, I came across an email sent to me by a friend in December of 2012, linking to this upload. I had replied that it had been a topic of discussion, and sent her this link. But I don't know where I had previously seen the ad referenced and what the final resolution was.
Digging further, via Google search, I think I finally solved the mystery of who worked on the ad:
Here is Ben Friesen's website.

Following the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, Friesen worked with Ad Council on an advertisement that featured dollar bills folded into different origami shapes.
More recently, Friesen combined efforts with the Brooklyn studio to fold about 3,000 origami roses in three weeks. The roses were used in an ad campaign for LAIKA animation studios and Focus Features’ stop motion animation film, “Kubo and the Two Strings,” which will be in theaters August 19.
For Friesen, each project is different and an opportunity to learn something new.
“I feel fortunate,” Friesen said, “to have a job that I’m excited about every day.”

Dollar Enterprise
Does anyone recognize the designer and model? I folded this quite a while ago and do not remember source or author; or make.
Here's one by Perry Bailey.
Here's one I folded by Won Park. Note the special serial number on the dollar bill.

Won Park's fighter jet
This is one of the first models I folded of Won Park's, back around 2002. I think that may have been our first OUSA convention?
Joel Bauer is the one who was responsible for putting Won in touch with the origami community and setting his sights to venture to NYC for the convention.
Joel met Won while vacation in Hawaii. Won, at the time, was a street artist. When Joel returned back to Los Angeles, he raved about this origami artist he had met. I thought he might have been exaggerating, since this was a guy no one had ever heard of. Joel brought back some of Won's amazing work. Won was a lone folder who soon became known to the community after OUSA. Joel helped convince both Won and myself to attend our first origami convention.

Bringing a Dollar Bill to Life
Manipulating the audience....
Sorry for the sad camera angle. I should have had someone else film.

Model Menu sneak peak: $ Flower-in-a-Pot
I'm signed up to PCOC so far to teach at least 2 models. This is one of them.
I think I taught this at my first OUSA Convention around 2002. Herman Lau went out of his way to make sure I taught it according to his specifications as, at the time, he said people were getting the proportions of the pot wrong.
The class will also be remotely broadcast. So for those of you who are unable to attend, please consider tuning in from the comforts of your home.
I'm hoping Herman Lau himself can still attend (he's located up in Sacramento).

Cherry Blossom Festival last weekend in Monterey Park
Last Sunday in Monterey Park at the annual Cherry Blossom Festival.....
This is one of the first things I do in my demo, asking who in the audience has folded paper before (most people have probably done a paper glider) and as a lead in to action models.
My indoor stage demo was scheduled at 3pm on Sunday but then changed last minute to 4pm to accommodate another performer.
I've been doing this festival since 2002 or 2004. I think it may have been my very first one and "big break" in doing things like this. The first year I was outdoors with a booth. I think my second year I had been given the center of the indoor gymnasium with 4 tables boxing me in. At some point, I was asked to start doing stage demos. That's when I had Yami and Joe with me, too.
I talk a bit about the evolution from traditional models into modern origami; including practical application nowadays into physics, sciences, and technology. Then show off modern works of art.
My material has become such that it's growing a bit stale; but I follow a formula that I don't even need to rehearse, because I've done it so many times now. Once I start talking about different moneyfolds, it segues into the realm of origami magic.
Us paperfolders love magic:
I'm a fungi:
After teaching Yami's banger to the group (really small crowd I thought, this year), I engage them in a "quick fold" contest for prizes: Who can fold a banger (doesn't have to be the one I just taught) and make it pop first?
The big finish:

Tomoko Fuse Hexagonal Box
Taught the Tomoko Fuse-style hexagonal $ box last weekend:
I'm hoping to redo the archaic and primitive video tutorial I made almost 10 years ago on the model.
Posted by paperhawaii (Hat tip: Hisako TANJI):
The dollar version developed by Helen Sperber and Jim Cowling can be found here.
I've seen quite a number of dollar bill variations of Fuse-type boxes in recent years.

| Brilliant Mind of Edison Lee |
Another friend of mine along the same weekend posted on FB photos of her at the Japanese-American National Museum and shopping in a supermarket with George Takei and his husband (got his opinion on the whole gay Sulu thing- publicly known about).
I'm not a big fan of the Abram's reimagined Star Trek universe (enjoyable on their own terms); but have any of you ever bothered to check out the fan-made Star Trek Continues? Absolutely impressive and amazing at how well they have captured the heart and spirit, the look and feel, of the Original Series. It's like discovering lost episodes. They are that good!
