October POP meeting

Jared in charge!

I arrived an hour into this month's POP meetup.  Joel Stern was out so Jared Needle was charged with running the meeting.   He was just finishing up with teaching Hideo Komatsu's jack-o-lantern.

Larry taught a bat that I believe (from Larry's description) is from a Tadashi Mori bat video.  Ours don't quite look like the bat in the video, as Larry had to jog his memory and reverse engineer his sample, in teaching.  But I browsed the video and am pretty sure this is the one.

Luca taught a pyramid.  (David Donahue's model?).

And Brad taught an Arnold Tubis triangle box from a hexagon- 1 of 15 models that will appear in Arnold's next book.

Also a bit of promotion for Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles' monozukuri festival showcasing their most recent exhibit, The Roots of Monozukuri: Creative Spirit in Japanese Automaking.

Jared, Joel, and Brad are participating by representing origami with large scale models. It should run for a few days beginning the first weekend in November.

September POP

I made it to maybe my 2nd POP meeting this year.

The theme was action models.

The contestants are given a challenge, and if they pass, they qualify for a $50,000 award, which is granted to the contestant deemed the favorite of the judges and studio audience.
.
Jared will be presented with several from among 100 crease patterns, and will need to identify the models they will fold into. The episode airs on July 31 at 9:00 PM on Fox. Don't miss it!

Tomoko Fuse Hexagonal Box

Taught the Tomoko Fuse-style hexagonal $ box last weekend:

I'm hoping to redo the archaic and primitive video tutorial I made almost 10 years ago on the model.

Posted by paperhawaii (Hat tip:  Hisako TANJI):

The dollar version developed by Helen Sperber and Jim Cowling can be found here

I've seen quite a number of dollar bill variations of Fuse-type boxes in recent years.

POP Play

Today I taught Heinz Strobel's Surprise/Flipp Flopp model:

I brought with me a stack of leftover strips from cutting 8 1/2 x 8 1/2" squares out of astrobright letter-size paper.  I've been folding Strobel's model from 1 x 4 paper; but with the strips, I essentially did the 1 x 3 unit method (tucking away the excess paper).

IMO, this model is very accessible to beginners.

Bradley gave a rundown of Paul Jackson's workshop last weekend at the Japanese-American National Museum.

I had to leave early to catch the movie "Kubo" with my gymnasts.  We had postponed seeing it from last weekend.

July POP

Greyhound by Jared Needle
Roxbury Park was crowded and I could not find parking for a couple of blocks, circling; so I went to grab something to eat and then drove home.  There apparently was a dog show going on.

After listening to Joel's voicemail, I decided to go back and try again, arriving about 30 minutes before the end of the meeting (a number of people had already left when I arrived).  When I was there, Joel taught a Tomoko Fuse 3-piece model he learned at OUSA.  Very simple design.

Jared had a couple of designs I hadn't seen before.

Joel handed me a copy of his newly published "Origami Zoo", which I'll be reviewing within the next week.

A few pictures here.

POP last Sunday

I had to work and arrived for the last hour.  It looked to be a good turnout.  I also learned that Jared Needle's been back in the area since last August.  I did not know this.

POP Last Sunday

Fearless leader Joel Stern was out of town.  So Brian was our illustrious host.

One of my gymnasts came, as her brother is into origami:

His mom picked up a dollar origami book by LaFosse and Alexander while she and her oldest daughter were in NYC (they stopped by to see me at OUSA).

Bennett Arnstein's Yin-Yang 20-Piece Spike Ball

I'm blogging this on behalf of Bennett.

The Yin Yang Spike Ball:  Two colors wrap around each other. Each color is comprised of 10 modules. For folding instructions, check out the ebook "Spike Ball Heaven", sold as a pdf download on the OUSA website.

Last POP for 2014

Towelie by Jared Needle

Jared Needle tried to help me with the Sergey Yartsev ballerina crease pattern.  I did not get through it, but may try again.

Bennett Arnstein shows off a Star of David spinner

I folded Carmen Sprung's Stern Franziska for the first time; then turned it into a cool spinner.

Biggest surprise of the day was Jared Needle dropping in.  He apparently moved back here two days ago from his stint in Dayton, Ohio.

POP

I seem to have lost my origami somewhere....

Lisa Tanahashi finished off our POP meeting by teaching Carlos Bocanegra's persimmon/tomato.  Fun and easy model.

Travis taught Robert Lang's koi.

I met a couple of young folders who are into the super complex.  They borrowed Travis' Kamiya works 2 and folded about 100 steps worth of the minotaur in 2 hours.

Joel Stern encouraged us to make monkeys for the OUSA annual holiday gift.

Stopped by Olympic and Sawtelle (Japanese district in Santa Monica) for some dinner and found these rare $1.50 packets of 50cm x 50 cm super-sized kami.

Shin Han-Gyo's Single Sheet Rose Box

Joel Stern was out of town, leaving Lauri and her son Zak, in charge.

Zak's theme for the meeting was on mythological creatures.

I discovered a rose box by Shin Han-Gyo that I wanted to try.  Since it was described as "single sheet", I had hoped it had a closed bottom.  It did not.  It needs a bottom portion.

Diagrams generously made available here, on Shin Han-Gyo's blog.
