Celebrating Mr. Rogers

Blurb:

On this date, September 21, 1967, 51 years ago, Fred Rogers walked into the television studio at WQED in Pittsburgh to tape the very first episode of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, which would premiere nationally on PBS in February 1968. He became known as Mister Rogers, nationally beloved, sweater wearing, “television neighbor,” whose groundbreaking children’s series inspired and educated generations of young viewers with warmth, sensitivity, and honesty. Today’s stop-motion, animated video Doodle celebrating Mister Rogers was created in collaboration with Fred Rogers Productions, The Fred Rogers Center, and BixPix Entertainment. Set to the iconic opening song of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood (“Won’t You Be My Neighbor"), the Doodle aims to be a reminder of the nurturing, caring, and whimsy that made the show feel like a “television visit” between Mister Rogers and his young viewers.

Traditional origami on Mr. Rogers Neighborhood

Season 4, episode 2, starting around 5:42 mark:

She passed away in 2013.  A YouTube commenter notes:

Mrs. Shiono (the lovely origami lady in this video), was my grandmother, who sadly passed away a few years ago. As you can tell from the video, she was an incredible origami artist and was still folding til the end. The fact that she had been on Mister Rogers' was a little fun fact my family loved to share: I still remember freaking out when this episode re-ran on our PBS station one time. She would be happy to know this episode made an impression on so many of you in the comments, when you were watching it on TV and even watching it now so many years later.

I haven't seen the recent Mr. Rogers documentary movie, but I've only heard great things about it.

Guinness World Record Paper Glider Throwing

Hat tip Fermin Fernandez Mendez:
It takes South Korea's Junguk Lee six minutes to fold each of his powerful piercing paper planes, essential for this record attempt, as seen on China's CCTV Guinness World Records Special

Superbrain

Dr. Lang's email sent to the Origami Email List:

Hi all,

Several weeks ago, I was invited to Nanjing, China, to be one of the “course-setters” for a Chinese game show, “Superbrain”, in which two teams of contestants compete in various types of mental challenge, and the one I was involved in required examining origami crease patterns with spots on them and estimating how many of the spots would be visible on the outside of the folded model. The show is now posted on the intertubes:

You have to wait through 45 seconds of commercials to get to the show. The origami stuff starts showing up at about 40:00 in.

I want to especially draw your attention to the other course-setter, Pei Haozheng (裴浩正), who is a very talented origami artist and designer (and, incidentally, did the vast majority of the course-setting work; I was basically the window-dressing). Most of the origami you see during they show is his work. He’s a skilled artist and a nice guy, and we had some fun chats, where I learned more about the origami scene in China. There’s not a lot of folders, and a few famous (and infamous) ones who have a tendency to pass off others’ work as their own (to the chagrin of the rest), but the community of original designers is vibrant, if small, and growing. I expect we’ll see more from them in the coming years! And keep an eye on Pei.

Enjoy,

Robert

Origami Revolution on PBS

Haven't even sat down for time to watch this, yet; but the whole community has been buzzing about it.

According to Seth Friedman through "Google trends", searches are up 46% on origami since the NOVA airing.

Letters to Dad

Description:

A little boy is missing his father, a soldier overseas. Being a kid, he tries to send his dad letters by throwing them over the fence as a fleet of paper airplanes. A kind next-door neighbor finds these paper airplanes and packages them up in a box to send to the father. When the neighbor receives a delivery of replies from overseas, he sends the paper airplanes back over the fence for the son to read. The Paper and Packaging Board helps make even the distance of oceans seem to disappear.

A delightfully simple ad for the most simple of products, the Paper and Packaging Board's, 'Letters to Dad' is a beautiful reminder of the power of paper.
